Rumors of an HP Pocket PC Phone with WiFi
:
There aren't any pictures or anything, but there are some rumors of a new "iPAQ 6000" Pocket PC from HP. This one looks like it'll be more of a Pocket PC Phone, and have quadband GSM/GPRS, built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, an SD card slot, and an integrated digital camera. Could this finally be the cellphone with WiFi we've been dreaming of? Read...

Network trouble for the BlackBerry 7230
:
Because of problems on T-Mobile's network, it hasn't been possible to access HTML websites on the BlackBerry 7230 for about a week now. To make matters worse, rather than come clean about the problem, some users were being told that T-Mobile simply no longer supported HTML browsing anymore. T-Mobile says they're working on the problem, but haven't said how long it'll take to get things back to normal. Read...

WiFi: the new Bluetooth?
:
Whenever we have to explain the difference between Bluetooth and WiFi, we usually just say something like, "Bluetooth is like wireless USB, WiFi is like wireless Ethernet." At which point they usually ask us what USB and Ethernet are. Potentially mucking up our succint little explanation, National Semiconductor is working on a low-power version of 802.11b that could potentially replace Bluetooth in PDAs and cellphones. E-mail is broken
:
"Somewhere between that spam promoting spyware disguised as a chipper e-greeting and the latest e-mail-borne virus masquerading as an urgent software upgrade, something got lost.
Not just a single overlooked urgent message from your boss, lodged in a sea of ghastly teenage bestiality spam, but something more fundamental, something more essential....The questions now are: Can e-mail be saved? How bad is the problem, really? And what can be done to fix it? Salon interviewed four Internet pioneers, computer scientists who have been online longer than most of the rest of world and who, in some cases, helped set up the systems we use today." Zero-day IE exploit just the beginning
:
A zero-day exploit targeting an Internet Explorer (versions 5 and forward) vulnerability is being used to install a Trojan on vulnerable systems. Experts warn that it's only a prelude to a series of attacks that are likely to be highly successful.
'This zero-day exploit is huge. It will likely be a major and highly successful, vector of attack upon thousands of computers for some time,' says Ken Dunham, malicious code intelligence manager at iDEFENSE. 'We have verified that attackers are installing backdoor Trojans and dialers on targeted computers at will.'
'Multiple examples of the exploit code are available for attackers to analyze and use in crafting their own attack,' adds Dunham. 'This type of code availability and underground activity traditionally foreshadows a flurry of malicious attacks.' " (Marc Erickson)

Wi-Fi vs. 3G
:
This article is really hard to decipher: But the point seems to be that SkyNetGlobal, a Wi-Fi operator in Australia, is preparing to support voice on its network by working with a clearinghouse, HotSpot Global. It seems that the clearinghouse will support roaming for users of Wi-Fi enabled phones, but it's not clear if the idea here is to let customers roam from one operator's network to the next or just to let customers roam within one service provider's network. Regardless, the interesting point about the article is that SkyNetGlobal is eager to enable voice on its Wi-Fi network as competition to 3G cellular networks....
